My english essay,
Why taxes shouldn't be reduced.

Ever since the Ancient Egyptians first discovered the taxing system, it has been applied to every single citizen in every country for centuries and in fact, it still is. Every individual has to pay some sort of tax; whether or not it is renting a bicycle or even buying an item, some sort of tax is applied to its price. An average Australian paysup to 30% from their income towards tax annually. The big question is, is this too much for people to withdraw out from their pocket money? Or is this a reasonable amount? Taxes have existed for its own specific reason and it has been very beneficial to us. It has provided us a strong economical market, offered us with the basic services and facilities we acquire, reduced some major issues such as binge drinking and smoking, facilitate the pensioners and has even given some aid to the environment.

Currently, the world is experiencing a financial global crisis. The United States of America, however, is undergoing the worst among all the countries and to which is called the ‘Great Depression’. The previous government, George Walker Bush, had made a rather erroneous move by trying to make the citizens buoyant by reducing the amount of tax to be paid. As a result of his actions, the country now undergoes a prodigious recession, owing trillions of dollars to other countries. Thus, it is pivotal not to reduce taxes at a rate which would enable the country itself to prevent this inauspicious event from happening.

Another prime merit taxes has brought to our lives is taxes has provided us with the basic services and facilities we necessitate: schools and teachers for education and to not only we gain but also for the newer generations to come, hospitals and doctors to give us aid when we suffer a disease and the military base and the police which shields us from danger. If taxes are reduced, the salary and funding to these services and facilities would be lowered too which would lead to consequences such as people not wanting to get a job in that area of services which would lead to lack of assistance and thus, closing down and the public not getting the services needed. Therefore, it is highly important if we do not reduce the rates of our taxes to prevent mishap which may follow other mishaps to occur.

Global warming. An issue practically the entire globe is facing right now and the dominant hitch that has caused this to happen is by the emission of Carbon Dioxide (C02). However, the taxing system has lifted some of that burden for the environment. A tax called the ‘Carbon tax’ has been introduced to the world to basically charge any factory that emits Carbon Dioxide into the air depending by the amount burnt. Nevertheless, if taxes are lowered, this would mean that less tax would be charged on these factories which would mean giving an indirect invitation to factory owners to burn more things which would release Carbon Dioxide to which would contribute to global warming.

An average single pensioner would receive an average of $273 a week and if a couple, they would receive $456 a week. It is also researched that almost 80 per cent of Australians aged 65 and over are surviving on the pension alone. Despite the pathetic amount of money they are already receiving, imagine if our taxes were cut. It would mean that these pensioners would probably only get to live on about $100 a week. Hence, if we do not reduce our tax, this would at least allow pensioners to enjoy their retirement after an average of 40 years of working life.

The issue of binge drinking and smoking has always been a pressing issue in all debates. Firstly, it has done harm to people’s health and secondly, it has caused various unfortunate accidents. However, the taxing system has helped this issue in a way to which now, alcohol and cigarettes are now being taxed on heavily and in a sense, to prevent people from overly purchasing these items. Not only that, this could lead to prevention of children under eighteen from drinking at such a young age as they would not be able to afford it. If we reduced the tax, this would mean that an increase of crime caused by people getting drunk would occur and not only that, death rates would rise as people would be in a sense, ‘allowed’ to purchase more tobacco to smoke on.

The benefits of the tax paid by the people are tremendously high in importance. If it is reduced, the world may undergo various difficult obstacles to get over. However if it is not reduced, it may lead to many benefits, whether it is to support our economical markets, facilitating us with various needy services and facilities, reducing people consuming alcohol and smoking, helping out the pensioners or even giving aid to the environment, our lives has in a sense have been immensely improved because of the taxing system.
